Examining The Association Between Single-leg Squat Performance And Injury In Female Collegiate Athletes

The Single-Leg Squat (SLS) is a movement assessment that can be used to examine deficits and asymmetries in lower extremity (LE) biomechanics. To date, few studies have investigated the relationship between SLS performance and future LE injury risk in female collegiate athletes. PURPOSE: To examine the association between SLS performance and injury risk in female collegiate athletes. METHODS: A total of 108 athletes (height = 168.9 ± 9.1 cm, mass = 68.5 ± 11.0 kg, age = 19.8 ± 1.5y) underwent SLS testing prior to the start of their competitive seasons: basketball (n = 12), field hockey (n = 16), gymnastics (n = 13), lacrosse (n = 23), softball (n = 23), and volleyball (n = 17). The participants stood on their test limb with their non-stance limb positioned at 90° of knee flexion with their hip flexed to 45° and were instructed to squat down as far as possible without losing their balance. Participants performed one set of four consecutive single-leg squats on each leg. A Microsoft Kinect sensor using Athletic Movement Assessment software (PhysiMax®) was used to capture the following kinematic variables: hip flexion, knee flexion, medial knee displacement (frontal plane projection angle), and trunk flexion. Only data for participants with at least 3 recorded squat reps were included in the analysis. Participants were followed during their competitive season for injury incidence, defined as any LE injury that resulted in full restriction from 1 or more practices or games. Univariate regression models were used to examine the association between incidence of injury and age, BMI, and all kinematic variables. RESULTS: Findings revealed no association between injury and any of the kinematic variables: hip flexion (R: OR = 0.97, 95%CI = 0.92-1.02; L: OR = 0.99, 95%CI = 0.95-1.04), knee flexion (R: OR = 0.99, 95%CI = 0.96-1.03; L: OR = 1.00, 95%CI = 0.97-1.04), trunk flexion (R: OR = 0.94, 95%CI = 0.88-1.01; L: OR = 0.97, 95%CI = 0.90-1.04), medial knee displacement (R: OR = 1.02, 95%CI = 0.96-1.09; L: OR = 1.02, 95%CI = 0.97-1.08). In addition, no association was found between injury and age (OR = 1.08, 95%CI = 0.79-1.47) or BMI (OR = 1.03, 95%CI = 0.88-1.20). CONCLUSIONS: There was no association between SLS performance and LE injury in this cohort of female collegiate athletes.
