Understanding the Role of Jasmonic Acid in Growth, Development, and Stress Regulation in Plants

In an era of frequently changing environmental conditions, plants face serious environmental insults that disturb normal growth and developmental processes and impose yield penalties. Stress factors force a plant’s internal molecular machinery to trigger interconnected responses like alteration in the expression of genes, cellular metabolism, and so on. It also modifies the physiological and developmental pathways in plants. To overcome these unfavorable environmental conditions, which include both abiotic and biotic stress factors, a wide range of mechanisms are activated. In this regard, perception of stress stimuli and signaling and activation of stress-responsive genes by phytohormones like jasmonic acid (JA) play a significant role in the regulation of various plant defense responses. JA is a ubiquitous lipid-derived signaling compound (fatty acid) of the oxidized lipids family. JA signaling has been well documented in model plants like Oryza sativa , Arabidopsis thaliana , and Nicotiana benthamiana , which provides significant evidence of its involvement in the regulation of growth, development, and stress modulation either alone or in interaction with other phytohormones like auxin, gibberellic acid, cytokinin, brassinosteroids, salicylic acid, and abscisic acid. The chapter is intended to focus on the biotechnological approach to manipulating plant responses by modifying the path of JA action. Genetic manipulation of JA is discussed in this chapter to look at new perspectives in the field.
