Entropy is not maximum in the equilibrium state of multi-phase and reactive systems

The foundation of standard thermodynamics is the postulate of the Second Law, that entropy of an isolated system is maximum in equilibrium. Direct computation of balanced diffusive flows by a novel method based on quantum mode transition theory reveals that entropy is not maximum when particles can transform through phase transitions and chemical reactions. The Second Law is therefore not generally valid and standard theory cannot determine the state of systems with transforming particles. This new "modal thermodynamics" theory is comprehensive, and agrees with known empirical laws of nature, without entropy or postulate.
