The Baumann and Serra study illustrates some of the important advantages to be gained when one study builds on another. Baumann and Serra showed that Richard Braddock’s result, which Braddock was appropriately reluctant to generalize beyond the sorts of magazine writing represented by his texts, in fact, applied equally well to social science texts written for elementary school children. Braddock clearly recognized that observer reliability was a problem. He knew that he needed to convince his readers that his judgments about the locations of the main points of paragraphs were ones that others could agree to. Baumann and Serra’s replication, then, led to a number of improvements in Braddock’s original research design. Braddock and Baumann and Serra brought very different perspectives to the study of topic sentences. Braddock focused on the problems of teaching college students to write paragraphs and Baumann and Serra focused the problems of teaching primary school students to read them.
