Surveillance for unexplained deaths that have hallmarks of infectious disease can detect infectious diseases of public health importance such as vaccine-preventable diseases, other reportable diseases, bioterrorism events, and emerging infections that might otherwise be missed by traditional surveillance systems. This type of surveillance is best done by public health staff in collaboration with medical examiners, coroners, and pathologists. It is important to obtain accurate and standardized data regarding infectious disease-related deaths and to collect a standardized set of specimens for routine and reference testing for infectious pathogens that includes methods to obtain an organism-specific diagnosis. This type of program depends upon the availability of adequate specimens, and adequate pathologic and laboratory evaluations. Fostering and maintaining close partnerships between public health staff, medical examiners, reference pathologists, and microbiologists are critical components of successful surveillance.
