The science of nucleation is briefly surveyed and many attendant challenges are noted.The emerging molecular-level theory of nucleation is discussed as is the importance of a diffusioncontrolled reaction kinetic treatment in that theory.Experimental study of nucleation at the molecular level is discussed.A thermodynamic phase change will occur whenever conditions of either instability or metastability are established.In the casf of instability there is no energy barrier to be surmounted for the phase change, while.in the metastable case there is such a barrier; as we will discuss more fully, nucleation relates to passage over that barrier.There are many common instances which involve nucleation,e.g.,.the various forms of precipitation (rain, snow and hail), fog, clouds, smoke, the various facets of pollution and smog, etc. These, and others we will consider later, frequently have substantial economic impact.Further nucleation has many \ scientific challengesl as we shall discuss; these challenges involve classical physics, statistical mechanics and quantum
