Developing Neuroscience in Strasbourg Keith LangleyIf there were those who doubted the need for a new Society for Neurosciences they were proved wrong in Strasbourg this summer.The interest shown in the First Meeting of the International Society forDevelopmental Neuroscience organized by G. Gombos and G. Vincendon, came largely from non-members of the Society.While over half of the European contingent was from the host nation, significant participation came from Italy, the UK, FRG and Switzerland, and North America was also well represented.Some par ticipants travelled from as far afield as Australia and Japan.Historically, there was something of the 'déjà vu' about this congress.13 years previously, G. Vincen don and G. Gombos both participated in the organi zation of the First International Meeting at the Centre de Neurochimie of a now well-established organiza tion, the ISN.An attempt was made for this first meeting of the Society to cover as many different aspects of the devel oping nervous system as possible.7 symposia, 2 work shops and 9 round tables packed into 4 rainy days cov ered subjects ranging from factors of growth and dif ferentiation and synaptogenesis to the role of cytoskeletal structures in neural differentiation and immuno logical approaches.A symposium on clinical aspects was also included.While no single theme was adopted for the scientific programme, much of the proceedings, however, could be broadly classified into those concerned with various fundamental aspects of neurones and glial cells and those concerned with synaptogenesis.Three round tables dealt with different properties of neuronal and glial cells.M. Schac/mer introduced contributions by E. Bock, C. Goridis, F. de Vilry, J. Mallet, M.S. Ghandoitr and K. Langley on immunological approaches in volving classification and subclassification of cells on the basis of their immunoreactivity using cell-specific enzymes, proteins, glycoproteins or lipids as markers.Studies described by N. Seeds show that antibody di rected against cell surface components influences cell migration reaggregation cultures.The potential of im munological approaches was exploited by contributors
