Korea’s economic development has been outstanding; the fourth largest economy in Asia and eleventh largest in the world. With regard to the Korean economy’s transition, it is clear that the post-1997 era, which seemingly brought about a fundamental overhaul of the structure of the Korean political economy, contributed to the change of the Korean market image among foreign companies or multinational corporations. The country must be open to criticism and establish a realistic and comprehensive strategy, which should aim at transforming the country into a mature economy, with a more open, transparent, competitive, globalized and culturally dynamic society. As Korea enters the stage of a mature economy, the country will continue to grapple with the challenges of maintaining or even improving its nation brand image in the face of increasing competition globally. As Korea’s nation image has been potentially tarnished by external perceptions of its northern neighbour, improving the image of North Korea would indirectly help Korea’s own image.
