‘Gathered’ in Cranmer’s Translation of a Prayer of Chrysostom

In 1544, Archbishop Cranmer translated a Greek prayer that he used to conclude the first authorized vernacular liturgy in England, published as An Exhortation unto Prayer … Also a Litany with Suffrages. Cranmer later incorporated (a revised form of) that Litany into the first Book of Common Prayer (1549), where it, along with the Greek prayer, remained through subsequent revisions. Cranmer’s memorable translation of what he calls ‘A Prayer of Chrysostom’1 has attracted critical attention, in particular because of Cranmer’s apparently mistaken translation of συμφωνοῦσιν (sumphonousin), which means ‘agreed’, as ‘gathered’. The question is, why? The common theory is that, rather than working directly from the Greek, Cranmer relied upon a Latin translation, which he followed into the error.
