OBJECTIVES: We aim to study the relationship between memory impairment and manic symptoms in First-Episode Psychosis (FEP) patients.BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments in FEP have been widely reported, but few studies have focused on manic symptoms.MATERIAL AND METHODS: 91 First-episode patients met inclusion criteria (u22652 psychotic symptoms of section A in DSM-IV-TR; 7-65 range age) and were therefore enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The assessment instruments used were TAVEC, TAVECI, YMRS and PANSS (P5: Grandiosity). The statistical test used was Pearsonu2019s correlation and multiple linear regression model in which the variable Memory (semantic list B) was introduced in an Enter model and in a second step with Stepwise method in which Cannabis, Gender and Age were control variables.RESULTS: The use of semantic strategy in the immediate memory of list B correlates with higher scores in Grandiosity both in the acute (p=0,005) and in the stable phase (p= 0,037) of FEP. Higher total scores of manic symptoms in the acute phase correlated with the use of serial strategy in immediate memory of list A (p=0,046). Higher scores in Grandiosity in the acute phase correlated significantly with the number of intrusions in the set of free memory testing (p=0,009). Among control variables, only cannabis correlated negatively (p=0,045) in the relationship between memory of list B with Grandiosity (p=0,003).CONCLUSIONS: Memory was found to be altered in FEP-patients. Higher scores on manic symptomatology related to a better immediate memory, with increased intrusions, regardless the use of a semantic o serial strategy. Cannabis use reduced performance in semantic strategy in the acute phase of FEP and Grandiosity power performance.
