Digestive System
Résumé fourni par la source
Conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract occur in pigs of all ages. Enteric diseases substantially compromise production efficiencies and profitability of pig production globally. Different forms of fiber in the diet can influence the composition and metabolic activity of the large intestinal microflora in pigs. Alternatives to antibiotic inclusion in weaner diets include the use of organic acids such as potassium diformate. Phytogenic feed additives comprise a wide variety of herbs, spices, and products derived from these materials that have been shown to have antimicrobial properties in vitro. Liquid feeding can improve the feed intake, growth, feed conversion, and health of weaned pigs. Oral rehydration fluids are used in piglets with acute diarrhea especially during outbreaks of enterotoxigenic E. coli and rotavirus infections. Gastric over-distension can occur in adult pigs, especially in sows, but the cause is uncertain. The peritoneal cavity is intrinsically involved with the health and normal function of the digestive system.
