The road network in the Lez valley has been a focus of morphological and archaeological research for several decades. Preventive archaeology in the region in recent years has considerably enhanced the data-base through large-scale investigation around Roman-period roads. These multiple studies provide a detailed picture of the roadways found, including their construction techniques and related works, and enable a preliminary ranking of the road network. Furthermore, the recurrence of Iron Age burial groups bordering excavated routes argues for the early presence of these roadways in land-scape development and underlines their persistence. A repeated link between burial areas and roads invites consideration of the factors through which the former were established along trackways and also of what burial areas can tell us about a road’s status
