This chapter shows how the population of Britain has changed over the last seventy years or so and how it compares with other countries. In a society like ours which is always changing the Government needs to plan ahead. The number of people who die each year is also related to the size of the existing population and is expressed in the same way as the Birth Rate. Although people now spend longer in full-time employment, wages and conditions have steadily improved. During the last twenty years, for example, the average number of hours worked each week has decreased and the average number of holidays each year has increased.
