Childhood is a very important time in the life of human beings, important because children grow and develop more in their first few years of life than at any other time later on. All children need to be looked after until they are old enough and experienced enough to take care of themselves. At birth a new-born baby is almost completely helpless. He/she needs the care and protection of someone older. Childhood is the time when children begin to learn that boys and girls are different, and that our society expects males and females to do different things and behave in different ways. The NSPCC helps nearly 200 children a day. Over forty per cent of the children are under five.
