The magnitude of the taxonomic, spatial and temporal diversity of the data housed in the thousands of natural history collections is colossal. This chapter provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book aims to unveil this scientific universe based on natural history collections at the beginning of the 21st century. It deals with various subjects and focuses either on a scientific problem, a specimen, a group of organisms or a set of collections. The book summarizes and analyzes the concepts that led to the creation of collections and classification systems of life and minerals. It shows how a study of hyperaccumulators of metals and rare earths in herbarium plates was possible using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The book concludes with a study of conservation, a research theme that is inseparable from the existence of collections.
