Canine Detection Teams to Support Oil Spill Response Surveys
Le résumé fourni par la source
Canines have been employed to detect a wide range of materials since they became domesticated, but only in the past decade have they been applied to locate spilled oil. Oil detection by canines is an emerging science and immediate important research opportunities include the definition of odor signatures that emanate from the oils and that are recognized by the canine. The current oil detection canine methodology emerged from lessons learned in landmine detection dog training. Although spilled oil detection canines are still in their infancy compared to explosive and drug detection canines, the applications and developments are benefiting from years of experience, lessons learned and the integration of science-based training into the technology. The canines were used in the wide area search technique, working off leash either in front of the shoreline cleanup assessment technique team or on the riverbank with the handler directing from the boat.
