The global mass extinction that occurred at the end of the Permian as well as the ecological recovery and radiation in the subsequent Triassic Period have been hotspots of palaeontological research in recent years. Here, we report an example of lacustrine black shale with fish fossils (Triassodus cf. T. tongchuanlepis You) from the Chang 7 Member of the Triassic Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin, China, deposited in the Late Triassic. The body of the newly described fish fossil species has the shape of a long spindle and is covered with diamond-shaped scales. The layers with high abundances of fish fossils were grey-black and thinly layered to laminar mudstones. Higher mud content was associated with greater fossil abundance and more complete preservation. The characteristics of Triassodus tongchuanlepis sp. nov. reveal a close relationship between this fish and Myriolepis of the Middle to Late Triassic in Australia, as well as some relationship with Gyrolepis of the Middle to Late Triassic in Europe. This study is of great significance for the division of the Middle Triassic and Late Triassic strata in the southern margin of the Ordos Basin, and the comparative study of Triassic fishes in different regions.
