The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) is a standards-setting body founded to promote international sharing of human genomics and health-related data across both research and healthcare, in order to advance genomics and medicine. In this special issue of Cell Genomics, members of GA4GH provide a comprehensive guide to their work of developing open-source interoperable standards and policy frameworks and implementing these in programs internationally. These standards are designed to increase the FAIRness (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) of datasets and are flexible in supporting diverse models of responsible data sharing, including central or distributed databases, cloud platforms, and federated networks.
