Management of Chronic Severe Asthma

Severe asthma, though accounting for only 5–10% of cases, leads to a significant burden on the healthcare system. Identifying and addressing the various comorbidities in a timely manner remains the cornerstone of management of severe asthma. A well-coordinated multi-disciplinary team comprising a pulmonologist, specialist asthma nurse, chest physiotherapist and speech and language therapist is key to effective management. Differentiation and categorisation into various inflammatory phenotypes and endotypes has now made it possible to have a more personalised and targeted approach to such patients, which along with the advent of biological agents, has tremendously improved the prospects in the management of severe asthma.
