Determination of Phase-Distributed Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Air by Grease-Coated Denuders

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds made up of two or more fused aromatic rings. Several PAHs are considered to be potential human carcinogens. The first research undertaken to separate gaseous and particulate phases of PAHs utilized the denuder tube bundle design. Field evaluations of the open-tube denuder were conducted during both summer and winter seasons in Columbus, Ohio, during 1987. In order to achieve lower detection limits necessary to permit accurate phase distribution measurements, especially for the larger PAHs, sampling rates of 100 L/min or more are needed. Several different designs were considered based on use of commercially-available tubing sizes and wall thicknesses, using the model developed by Coutant et al. to provide guidelines. Two series of measurements were made to determine the efficiency of transmission of ambient particulate matter by the high-volume compound annular denuder.
