Nebulizer Aerosol Drug Delivery Through High Flow Nasal Cannula in Adult Patients

Introduction: Drug delivery by inhalation is used to treat obstructive lung diseases especially during exacerbations combined with corticosteroids and antibiotics. Aims and Objective: The purpose of our study is to understand the COPD population the effects of this method of administration and compare two method of administration of inhaled drugs (classical devices for administration of aerosol or administration of aerosol drugs through HFNC) Methods: We evaluated 60 patients with COPD exacerbations with similar disease characteristics and divided into three arms: 20 patient undergoing classical administration via Aerosol, 20 patient subjected to administration of Aerosol in HFNC, 20 patient undergoing the classic Aerosol administration which also HFNC. All patients underwent spirometry on day globally, then therapy was repeated plethysmography after 24h, 72h and 5 days. It evaluated the quality of life at the end with SGRQ-I at the end of comparing treatment with those made previously. Results: Patients who performed classical aerosol therapy and classical aerosol therapy but also performed HFNC we noticed a certain stability of the static and dynamic volumes and not significantly differences. Instead, for patients who carried aerosols through HFNC we recorded a significant reduction in TLC and VR, and improvement in quality of life assessed by Saint George9s Respiratory Questionnaire above all for the reduction of dyspnea. Conclusion: Using HFNC along with nebulizers as a potential therapy in aerosol medicine is a new and innovative approach for aerosol drug delivery to patients with pulmonary diseases.
