Does Household Wealth Level Affect the Body Mass Index of Women in Benin?

A multiple regression is used to assess the influence of household wealth index on BMI.• The wealth index is a composite measure that reflect the household's living standard.• Five wealth quintiles were considered: the poorest, the poorer, the middle, the richer, and the richest. DATA• This study uses the subset of 7170 unpregnant women of the demographic and health survey (DHS) data collected in Benin in 2017. FINDINGS Table 1: Factors explaining the change in BMI'***','**', '*', significance at 1, 5, and 10%. CONCLUSION• The results indicate that the BMI increases with wealth classes.• Women of richest households have significantly (at 1%) 3.97 higher BMI than those of the poorest households.• The results also indicate that urban areas women have significantly higher BMI than those of rural areas, which is consistent with most previous studies.• The BMI decreases with household size.• Actions to mitigate the obesity and overweight could focus on urban consumers.
