Readers of “The Art of Rhetoric at the Amphiareion of Oropos,” seeing the presentation of data and the general organization of material, may be inclined to infer that the pattern mirrored a sequential process of research. While a product of a scholastic tradition of education, author felt resources permitting a more complete knowledge of classical rhetoric were unattended to and that our understanding of ancient rhetoric was thereby limited. Mitchel quickly made it obvious to the author that much of the evidence of ancient writing, with work relevant to classical rhetoric included, had been either unexamined for centuries or unearthed only in recent decades. Yet many epigraphists saw as their primary function the recording and presentation of ancient inscriptions but not rhetorical analysis; in fact, many were reluctant to move beyond description.
