Communicating with Low-literate Adults

Floreak and his colleagues had undertaken the task of providing printed materials, that is, visuals and text, to help social workers convey parenting information to low-literate adults. Floreak worked with an interdisciplinary design team including writers, graphic designers, social workers, and psychologists. Because he and his colleagues recognized that they knew little about their audience, they began their project with a series of explorations. The statistical power of a comparison depends on the size of the difference the researchers are trying to find, the number of observations included in the comparison, and the variability of those observations. Many readers may not know what readability tests are based on or how they should be interpreted. There are several different readability tests, e.g., the Fry index, the Gunning Fog index, etc., but all are based on tabulating a few simple properties of text such as average word length and average sentence length.
