Shirley Brice Heath and Charlene Thomas lay out a basis for studying literacy development in the Thomas household by introducing the results of Heath’s long-term ethnographic research in Trackton. By identifying features of literacy development typical of families in Trackton and then contrasting them with features linked to such literacy artifacts as children’s books and such literacy events as bedtime stories, they establish a basis for understanding how these artifacts and events might be expected to impact the immediate environment. As Heath and Thomas point out, introducing an artifact into an environment is no trivial thing. They use the example of the introduction of the fork in Europe in the fourteenth century to make their point that such artifacts can have both immediate and long-range effects.
