Classification of Control in Intermittent Exotropia
Le résumé fourni par la source
INTRODUCTION: There is no widely accepted method for quantifying control in intermittent exotropia. METHODS: Twenty-nine intermittent exotropic patients less than 11 years of age were prospectively evaluated with a new scale to measure level of control for both the distance and near angle of deviation. Twenty (69%) were re-evaluated 2 to 12 months later using the same scale. RESULTS: In all but one of the 29 patients, the level of control at distance fixation was worse than or the same as the level of control at near. Among the 20 patients who had 2 or more exams, 7 demonstrated a worsening of control, 7 improved, and 6 showed no change. CONCLUSIONS: Our control scale for intermittent exotropia is useful in categorizing level and longitudinal changes of control. Our data suggest that approximately one-third of children with intermittent exotropia will demonstrate an improvement in control within the first year of follow-up.
