Diversity and effects of vegetation structure on Squamates in a cerrado area in southeastern Brazil: subsidies for the management of protected areas Several studies have suggested that native open areas from the Cerrado present greater species diversity than its forested formations.This pattern is probably the result of the interaction between ecological, historical and biogeographical processes.This trend has already been reported for the herpetofauna from Santa Barbara Ecological Station (SBES) and other Cerrado localities.In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate, in a local scale, the variation of Squamate community in relation to different diversity axes (taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic) along a gradient of vegetation complexity in the study area.Sampling was performed through pitfall fall traps, time-constrained search, incidental captures and observations by local people in four typical Cerrado vegetation types: campo sujo, campo cerrado, cerrado sensu stricto and cerradão.Between August 2016 and July 2018, which corresponded to 240 days of field sampling, we recorded 32 species of snakes and 13 species of lizards SBES.The different axes of snake and lizard diversity varied in distinct ways along the vegetation gradient, however, both groups seem to be negatively affected by an increase in vegetation structural complexity.The results described here reinforce the importance of the non-forested vegetation types typical of the Cerrado for the maintenance of Squamate diversity and the need of fire management to control vegetation encroachment.
