EnglishIn Portugal, vegetable crops consume large amounts of mulch films and, despite the advantages of using these materials in the yield, there are environmental impacts associated with film residues, if they’re not carefully removed. To find alternatives to conventional film, the project AGROBIOFILM tried to demonstrate the feasibility of biodegradable films for the bell-pepper production for industry, having the advantage of being incorporated in the soil at the end of the cycle. Along two Spring-Summer cycles, eight biodegradable films (with different colors and thicknesses) were tested to be compared with a polyethylene film (on the first cycle) and culture without soil covering (on the second cycle and traditional with mechanical harvesting). Meteorological data were obtained from a weather station. Fruit yield and quality were monitored along the crop cycle and the incidence of pests and diseases affecting the crop as well as the strength and durability of the new mulches, were also followed. In both years, there were no significant differences in crop yield. In the first cycle the polyethylene presented a yield of 52 t.ha-1, while the biodegradable mulch had 51 t.ha-1. In the second year, the modality soil without covering recorded the lowest yield (49 t.ha-1), in contrast to the ones with the new mulches (between 51 and 83 t.ha-1). There were no significant differences on the fruit quality, neither in the susceptibility to pests and diseases between all the modalities. It is also important to emphasize that the mechanical properties were not compromised when compared with polyethylene films. Based on the results obtained and the meteorological conditions, the new mulches appear to be a viable alternative to conventional film, foreseeing the possibility of mechanical harvesting on bell-pepper crop with soil mulching. portuguesEm Portugal, as culturas horticolas consomem elevadas quantidades de filmes plasticos na cobertura de solo e, apesar das vantagens do uso destes materiais no rendimento das culturas os seus residuos podem ter elevado impacte ambiental local se nao forem cuidadosamente removidos.
