We performed our investigation on the territory of "LAJTA Project" (Győr-Moson-Sopron County).In the area a long term small game research has been carried out for 30 years.In the course of our research, we used aerial method to estimate the density of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).We used a microlight aircraft and flew 400 meters above ground level, with 150 km/hour speed.The flight was organized in the end of winter at daylight.Two different cameras were used.One of them was a high-resolution thermal camera, while the other one was a DSLR camera with wide-angle lens.The camera position was vertical and they worked automatically.The investigated territory was 1000 ha.We performed total counts using 13 transects of 200 meter width.During the evaluation of the thermal images we used objected based picture analysis and classification.By this means we evaluated the locations of the animals.Thereafter we checked the pictures of the SLR camera and identified the species.During our research, we counted 213 roe deer on the total territory, while the density was 0,213 individual/ha.To validate our results we organized a ground survey using car and binocular.The result of the ground survey was 0,214 individual/ha.We concluded that the aerial survey method with the combination of thermal and DSLR camera worked fine, and it was appropriate to estimate the density of roe deer in a nonforested flat area.
