Exogenous Nitric Oxide‐ and Hydrogen Sulfide‐induced Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Plants

In the era of climate change, various environmental stresses such as salt, drought, heat, cold, toxic metals/metalloids, and atmospheric pollutants frequently affect plant production adversely. Plants have developed many adaptive features and tolerance mechanisms to combat those adverse situations, which include the synthesis of antioxidants, secondary metabolites, hormones, signaling molecules, etc. Among the signaling molecules, nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are considered as the most promising and effective against environmental stresses and play important roles in enhancing antioxidant defense and synergistic interaction with phytohormones and other protective molecules. Recently, a few donors of NO and H2S have been researched on different plant species, and it was observed that exogenous donors of both signaling molecules showed enhanced protection against various environmental stresses. A significant advancement in exploring the molecular bases of such protections has also been made. In this chapter, we will briefly summarize how the application of exogenous NO and H2S donors confers environmental stress tolerance in plants as well as their method of application and dose-dependent mannerisms.
