Continuing professional development for experienced educators: What do we really want?

Tertiary institutions in New Zealand invest time, money and resources into continuing professional development (cpd) for experienced teachers, yet it is unclear how well this investment meets the needs of those undertaking or arranging it. This paper will report on some of the findings of a multi-institutional survey from 2015. The purpose of the research was to explore experienced educators' perceptions of the value of cpd activities in the tertiary vocational education sector in New Zealand, and to inform the design of these programmes. This paper will introduce the literature surrounding cpd in the tertiary vocational education sector and report the findings regarding the type of cpd that experienced educators would aspire to, if time and money were not a barrier.
