Hiring processes vary widely and the way teaching is valued and evaluated can be confusing to navigate. For those seeking promotion or tenure, faculty handbooks are often vague in their directions on how to describe and document teaching excellence, which brings additional stress. This chapter deals with a breakdown of the various components of the hiring process. Assembling and submitting a dossier for promotion is one of the most critical exercises a faculty member will tackle during her or his career. Within this package, most institutions require that candidates for promotion provide supportive evidence for their teaching, service, and scholarship. Several strategies and practices are similarly facilitative for creating materials for hiring or promotion. The first is to spend considerable time reflecting on teaching. The second is to begin working on materials early and revisit them often.
