The Environmental Impact of Pollution Prevention and Other Sustainable Development Strategies Implemented by the Automotive Manufacturing Industry

In recent years, the US automotive manufacturing industry has implemented many pollution prevention and other sustainable practices in its manufacturing operations. Analysis of data reported to the US Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) characterizes the major sources of chemical releases from automotive manufacturing, how these sources and release quantities have changed over time, and the practices put into action to reduce pollution. The automotive manufacturing industry increased the proportion of TRI-reported chemical wastes that were recycled from 64% in 2005 to 76% in 2015, and over the same time-frame decreased the proportion of TRI chemicals released to the environment from 21% to 11%. Pollution prevention strategies that contributed to this reduction and emerging pollution prevention techniques that show promise are described herein.
