Comprehensive research on Konrad Adenauer&s;s foreign policy began, and since then quite a few monographs, readers, and articles have been published. Since the spring of 1952, Adenauer had developed a detente concept that, although concerned with possible solutions of the German question, anticipated in many respects the perceptions and expectations common to Western thinking during the sixties. There are very early indicators that Adenauer was convinced of the importance of direct contacts between the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic. Adenauer carefully established first contacts with Khrushchev and even initiated some explorations into the German question, although he thought it better to stress four-power responsibility in the latter. The German question limited to a degree his willingness to make concessions in his Ostpolitik . How far he would have been ready to go with the development of direct German-Soviet contacts during the last months of his chancellorship in 1963 must remain a subject of speculation.
