Reel-to-reel laser striated (RE)BCO strands for long length Roebel cables

Superconducting devices such as accelerator magnets, high field magnets and superconducting fault current limiters requires high current carrying cables with reduced AC losses. One possible way to get suitable conductors is the Roebel bar concept in which meander shaped coated conductor tapes are assembled. In previous studies we made Roebel cables up to 32 m in length. Additionally earlier studies showed that AC losses in Roebel cables with striated strands are further reduced. These results were obtained on short Roebel cable lengths up to 50 cm. In this work we used a reel-to-reel system in our picosecond laser machine with a longitudinal precision of ±5 µm and showed first results of critical current homogeneity of a 2 m long striated Roebel strand with 5 filaments. Accuracy of the striations and homogeneity of the superconducting properties will be compared.
