Airway infections are among the most common reasons why people attend their GP´s office. The clinical presentations are often quite different, as are the different types of infectious agents. Today PCR is the most used method for identifying the agents in general practice. We wanted to take a closer look at the more atypical infectious agents in a limited population and analysed nasopahrynx tests taken at the GP´s office in two counties in Norway in 2015 and 2016. The infectious agents we focused on were Mycoplasma pneumonia, Chlamydophila pneumonia, Bordetella pertussis, Human metapneumovirus and RS-virus. By analysing our results with the help of different parameters, such as gender, age, and seasonal variation, we were hoping to identify trends that also could be representable for a larger population. Agents like Mycoplasma pneumonia, metapneumovirus and RS-virus showed a seasonal distribution. Some of the agents were more common in certain age groups. The percentage of positive Mycoplasma, Chlamyodphila and Bordetella tests were highest for those between 5-15 years old, while metapneumovirus and RS-virus had the highest percentage in the age group between 0-4 years old. All the agents had a higher positive percentage for men than for women, and the difference was largest for RS-virus; 1,66 %. It was possible to identify some interference between the occurrence of metapneumovirus and RS-virus. Our results showed a diversity of different infectious agents throughout the year and could be used as an indicator of a need of a broader survey of infectious agents in Norway.
