The Importance of Listening to Host Communities

This chapter describes the two very different types of ‘host communities’ – those in the poorest countries that host 85% of the world’s refugees, and those in developed countries that proportionately host very few. The chapter explains why doing applied oral history with both sorts of host communities will be – albeit for very different reasons – crucial for resolving the world refugee crisis in the future. We review the little, though important, oral history that has been done to date with host communities, and we see why it is urgent to do more. We examine the swathe of critical oral histories done in recent years with populist and far-right, anti-migrant communities in the West. The chapter surveys the spectrum of eight different political positions that members of host communities can take around the reception or exclusion of refugees. Readers are assisted to locate their own position on this spectrum, realistically and honestly, before undertaking the kind of work taught in this book. The chapter concludes by explaining which other parts of the book focus specifically on oral histories with host communities.
