This chapter coaches readers through preparing interview questions strategically. We explore the different types of questions best suited to achieving different project goals, and we see the different theories of problem-solving behind these apparently simple questions. Moving into fieldwork, there is thorough guidance on health and safety protocols for the diverse participants involved in the project, from interviewers and volunteers to refugees, host community narrators and their entourages. We see how to meet the needs of narrators in practical, cultural, legal, social and emotional terms. A chart shows how to build rapport methodically across a refugee or host community interview, moving from closed to open questions while managing the intricate ethics of power balance involved. We add to the ethical guidance given in Chapter 6 , exploring empathic receptivity but also how to deal with any views considered unacceptable. Readers are taught the Nine Steers or conversational techniques that can elevate an applied oral history interview well above the impact of an ordinary conversation. And they learn how to navigate the fact that either refugee or host narrators may tell quite different narratives to different sorts of interviewers, from police or immigration officials, to peers and compatriots, to oral history interviewers.
