This concluding chapter situates the book’s methodology within the intellectual and socio-political contexts of the future. This involves looking closely into the chain of cause and effect relationships that exists between refugees and climate change. By examining the ripple effect that climate crisis will have in producing new waves of refugees, we can also detect the most effective ‘pressure points’ where applied oral history can intervene to help improve outcomes. The chapter overviews some of the problem-solving frameworks of the future within which applied oral history is nested and with which it cooperates as an effective partner. We see that they range from deep listening to conflict mediation, from participatory design to ‘glocalization’, from autobiographical testimony to creative innovation. We take encouragement too from reviewing vast social, political and economic overhauls that have already changed dysfunctional systems in modern times. And we conclude by looking ahead to a climate-altered future where robotics will have deleted so many traditional avenues of employment: there we see how applied oral history can enhance and future-proof the long-term careers both of students and professionals into the century ahead.
