Strategically Planning an Oral History Project that Will Improve Outcomes for Refugees and Host Communities

The next three chapters will coach readers through all the phases of doing an applied oral history project with refugees or host communities. This chapter shows first how to research the logistical, legal and political background around a given community so as to understand their needs, motivations, culture, politics, supporters and persecutors. We explore the roles of being an ‘insider’ or ‘outsider’; the differences between working with long-settled refugees, newly arrived ones and those still in transit; and issues involved in using either oral interpreters or written translators. A framework shows the different types of goals and audiences that a given project could have. Readers situate their own project within this framework. Appendiced templates then help readers to define their project’s goals, intended audiences and the format and dissemination of their end products. Readers are then shown how best to select narrators strategically to achieve those goals and reach those audiences. To prepare the project at a logistical level, appendices provide a toolbox of checklists, planners and forms that enable readers to plan all the resources needed, from budgets and staffing to equipment and training. They are also coached to construct their own Project Timeline and Project Logbook , containing a full breakdown of all roles, tasks and timings for every detail of their project.
