Prison‐based Programmes for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This chapter explores the definitional and identification issues specific to prisons, considers what treatment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in prison seeks to achieve, and reviews the existing research specific to prison-based programmes for people with IDD. Indigenous people have been assessed as being over-represented in prisons and are greatly over-represented within cohorts of inmates with intellectual disability. In prisons, it appears that the prevailing focus is on providing treatment specific to identified criminogenic needs rather than disability needs. People with IDD require additional supports when transitioning to, and residing within, the community. There have been a number of reviews, including two Cochrane reviews, around various aspects of treatment programmes for people who offend and people with IDD who offend. The chapter concludes with the considerations for future treatment programms and research.
