In my mind&s;s eye, I can imagine a young hunter watching a beautiful herd of buffalo from a convenient height amid the plains of midcentury America. I can also imagine a young lover of nature looking over the same view a century later. Now, with the facility of imagination, I can bring the two together. What conversation might take place? What would progeny say to progenitor about the contrasting scenes? Would progeny blame progenitor for the buffalo slaughter, remind him of his thoughtless neglect, or simply forgive and forget and accept the plains as they are today?
