March 1991: With bloody repression at an end, and the government of Moussa Traoré no more, could the country at long last make a move towards democracy? At the time, political neutrality enabled the National Union of Malian Workers (UNTM) to stand out as a body that could bring together organisations opposing the government Today, it no longer confines its activities to the needs of workers, but also concerns itself with the problems of all social groups affected by the crisis. However, the UNTM still has plenty to do if it is to turn itself into a democratic organisation. It also may lose its hegemony.
