Resolutionerna 1737 och 2231 om Irans urananrikning : en kritisk diskursanalys av mötesprotokoll med postkolonialt perspektiv

The meeting protocols regarding resolution 1737 and 2231 are based on Irans alleged uranium enrichment, which with technical capacity, can develop into a nuclear program with military purposes. The United Nations Security Council have used sanctions to control Irans uranium enrichment and the opinion differs if they have been effective or even justified due to the effects it has had on the country and its citizens. It has contributed to Iran becoming isolated from the international community. The United States has been prominent in the debate and has also introduced sanctions against Iran under national law, which have resulted in extensive sanctions. By approaching these resolutions through a critical discourse analysis and a postcolonial perspective my hope is to disentangle how the US and Iranian diplomats argue and adduce their arguments concerning Irans right to use uranium enrichment. The purpose of this study is to critically analyze two security council meeting protocols focusing on power and dominance by using Teun van Dijks methodological starting points. I have been able to identify power and dominance in the language’s discursive framework and the discourse strategies. The US presents Iran as a threat for the international peace and security, while Iran opine that the security council is unjust. The US is a permanent member of the security council and thereof have the power to change the discourse regarding Iran. Therefore, the view of the debate can be seen as both maintaining and reproducing a power structure.
