Staying Safe While Abroad
Résumé fourni par la source
Guiding students about personal safety is challenging. Going overseas on an elective is a great time to learn in a new environment. Since electives are often not more than a month or two, it is important to stay safe to get the maximum experience. The good news is that overseas medical electives generally proceed without incident; however, accidents and the unexpected can happen. Road accidents present by far the greatest risk to the overseas traveler. Most tenuous moments tend to occur when alone, without the relative safety of working within a larger organization. Perhaps the most important advice in these situations is to listen to one&s;s inner feelings about developing situations. As a medical practitioner, it is important to observe and respect the norms of the new country and our potential patients and co-workers. This is important for the ability to gain respect, a crucial aspect of patient care and teamwork.
