Endoscopic Septoplasty and Turbinoplasty – Indications and Protocol

Introduction: There are no standard recommendations regarding the choice of technique (endoscopic/conventional) for septoplasty and turbinoplasty. In this study are presented the statistical results of comparison between two groups of patients with common pathology operated endoscopically and conventional. Materials and Methods: For a period of 5 years 120 patients with obstructive nasal breathing due to septal deformity in areas III, IV and V according to Cottle combined with hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates were diagnosed and operated. The patients were divided into 2 groups (Group 1 consists of 70 patients underwent conventional septoplasty and turbinoplasty and Group 2 consisting of 50 patients operated endoscopically). The preoperative diagnostic methods were – ENT examination (including endoscopy), acoustic rhinometry and self-assessment questionnaire. Results: The results showed statistically better outcomes for patients in group 2 (operated endoscopically). Discussion: There is no standard recommendation in the ENT guidelines for method of choice for septoplasty and turbinoplasty – endoscopic or conventional. The results of the study show that in cases with septal pathology in areas III, IV and V combined with hypertrophy especially in the posterior part of the inferior turbinates the endoscopic technique has advantages compared to the conventional.
