The first goal of the project was to utilize the extensive mechanical testing, materials characterization, metallurgy, and computational modeling at LLNL and Kaiser Center for Technology to develop a SPF (superplastic formable) 7000 series-aluminum alloy with a high forming rate and high strength. The second goal was to develop a thermomechanical processing procedure that refined the grain size novel in existing aluminum alloys (e.g., 7475). The third goal involved altering the composition of a 7XXX series alloy. The fourth goal involved altering the surface state of the SPF alloys such that intimate contact of the interfaces can be attained.
