Status quo entrenched and no surprises in the Western Cape

Unlike previous elections in the province, \nthere was an expectance that the Democratic \nAlliance (DA) would retain control of the \nCity of Cape Town, as well as consolidate in \nother municipalities in the Western Cape. \nIn the run-up to the 2016 local government \nelection, the ANC, in the Western Cape \nput on a brave face indicating that it could \nunseat the DA. However, the 2016 election \nin the Western Cape saw an entrenchment \nof the status quo. Indeed, the story of the \n2016 Local Government Election in the \nWestern Cape is the story of the DA’s ascent \nand the ANC’s decline in the province. The \nDA consolidated its support base in the City \nof Cape Town from a comfortable majority \nof 61 percent, in 2011, securing a twothirds \nmajority of 68 percent in 2016. In \nthe rest of the Western Cape, the DA also \nconsolidated its support base, winning in \nmost municipalities with an outright majority \nand taking control of the balance through \ncoalition agreements. The African National \nCongress (ANC), which had lost control of \nthe city in 2006 when it was forced out of \npower through a DA-led coalition, saw its \nfortunes decline even further in 2016. The \nANC no longer controls a single municipality \nin the Western Cape. This article examines \nelectoral dynamics in the Western Cape, \nwhich saw the consolidation of DA support \nin the province.
