Prototyping crop-coefficient-aware smart irrigation system for rwanda's “akarima k'igikoni” campaign

This paper presents the prototyping phase of Crop-Coefficient-Aware Smart Irrigation Systems (CCASIS) that aims at boosting Rwanda's ambition to eradicate malnutrition by using kitchen garden (“Akarima k'igikoni”) campaign. Complimenting and building on the existing literature, the main contribution in this prototype is the precision of electronic control system used to efficiently control amount of water supplied based on humidity required by each specific crop. The precision is based on Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) metrics. It is anticipated to address the scarcity of water for irrigation in Rwanda by using rain water harvest (RWH) set-up in Rwandan model villages, locally called “imidugudu”. The project is envisaged to be realized in three phases: (a) prototyping phase (PP), presented in this paper, (b) Field implementation phase (FIP) in kitchen garden and (c) post-implementation analysis (PIP) phase which will compare the effect of CCASIS vs. conventional irrigation approaches used in Rwanda as well as its socio-economic impact analysis on target groups.
