Atrial fibrillation ablation : balancing between treatment efficacy and complications

The results of this thesis acknowledge one of the major\n contemporary problems in AF treatment, which is to find the optimal balance\n between ablation efficacy and related\n potential complications. A higher efficacy may be obtained by a more invasive\n ablation strategy, while this type of procedure also seems to increase the\n risk for complications.\n On the other hand, simplifying the procedure with a so-called single-shot\n device can also lead to an increased complication rate. Therefore,\n optimization of procedures\n with currently available catheters may be the best strategy to achieve a\n highly effective\n procedure for patients with paroxysmal or even persistent AF, without leading\n to\n significant complications. A minimally invasive strategy may be suitable for\n patients\n with (longstanding) persistent AF, especially if these patients have no\n comorbidities that\n require open heart surgery. The studies described in this thesis contributed\n to further\n elucidating the feasibility and potential risks of performing new ablation\n procedures\n and catheters. This may contribute to optimize AF ablation procedures.
